About Princes Street

Princes Street is a popular shopping destination located in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh. The buzzing strip is a must-visit for those seeking high street fashion, unique boutiques, or popular chains like Zara and Primark. The street is about 1.2 kilometres long, meaning you can quite easily walk the length of it as you meander in and out of the stores. It forms one of the borders of Edinburgh’s New Town, connecting with Leith Street in the eastern direction and Lothian Road out to the west. The road is restricted to general traffic, only allowing trams, buses and taxis for the majority of it.

Princes Street has an interesting history that dates back to the 18th Century when it was known as Lang Dykes, a medieval lane in what was then a country region. The street got its name from the eldest son of King George III, Prince George, Duke of Rothesay. The 19th century saw the street transform from predominantly residential buildings to various retail outlets that provided a foundation for the street to flourish into the shopping hub it is today. The organic development of the strip meant the aesthetic appearance was quite disjointed, so in 1967 plans were developed to redevelop the area. The intention was to improve the overall cohesiveness of the street as well as create more street frontage for retail. Today, it is the go-to shopping destination in Edinburgh.
